Trending Nail Layering: we're adopting it!

6 min to read

What if your nails received the same care as your face? With the nail layering trend, nail care takes on a new dimension. Inspired by Korean skin care and Japanese manicure, this technique is based on layering multiple layers of care to preserve and enhance the skin. Now, it is applied both in nail care and nail art. We explain it all in detail.

What is nail layering?

The concept of layering

Derived from the English term "layer," layering consists of stacking layers of beauty products, or even perfumes, in a very precise order. The goal is to achieve a care routine that is both rich and personalized. While European rituals tend to be minimalist, Asian (care side) and Middle Eastern (perfume side) rituals focus on accumulation to multiply effects and offer ultra-targeted care. The principle: each layer plays a specific role (hydration, nutrition, detox, etc.). This trend is now applied in manicure, both in maintenance and repair care for nails, and in nail art to play with polish colors and effects to shine all the way to the tips of the nails.

Combining layers of care to deeply treat nails is the principle of nail layering.

Origins of nail layering

Nail layering has its roots in Japanese manicure techniques. These promote the health and natural shine of nails through the successive application of layers of polish and nail care. A quest for natural perfection that we have seen with the clean nails trend and that goes hand in hand with a need for more environmentally and health-conscious practices. At Manucurist, this new manicure trend is obvious to us, as we have always approached manicure as a system of successive layers of care and/or makeup.

How many layers should be applied?

Traditional Japanese manicure follows a complete care protocol that involves layering 3 products:

  • A nourishing paste enriched with natural active ingredients, applied with a massage, to strengthen the nail structure.
  • A mineral powder to polish the nail plate and boost its shine.
  • A plant-based oil to hydrate and sustainably protect the nail.

This 3-layer principle creates synergy between treatments that multiplies the beneficial effects for the nail. Beyond 4 layers of products applied, layering loses effectiveness. The active ingredients in the last layers are blocked by the previous layers, so they have little effect.

Healthy nails routine

A healthy nail is a strong nail that grows regularly and without defects. However, it still needs maintenance to stay in good shape.

👉Our nail layering for healthy nails: for 2 weeks, apply Active™ Glow Raspberry in layering 3 times a week without removing the previous layers. At the same time, apply the Complete Serum twice a day and massage the nail and its surrounding area to soften and stimulate healthy growth of the nails. Additionally, apply the Perfecting Concentrate as often as you like, an easy-to-carry treatment to continuously strengthen nails and cuticles.

Ridged nails routine

Nicknamed nail wrinkles, ridges can appear with age, health issues, emotional shock, or nutrient deficiency. Good news, we have the solution to help you regain strong and smooth nails.

👉Our nail layering for ridged nails: for 2 weeks, lightly buff the nails with the preparatory file to smooth the surface. Then apply the treatment polish Active™ Smooth in layering every two days, without removing the previous layers. Twice a day, apply a drop of Green Oil by massaging it onto the nails and cuticles. Finally, 3 nights a week, apply the S.O.S. Mask in a thick layer and peel it off the next morning.

Damaged Nails Routine

Back-to-back applications of semi-permanent polish without rest time or intermediate care, sometimes with aggressive removal methods... Result: weakened nails that become thin, split, or brittle.

👉Our nail layering for damaged nails: over 2 weeks (or 4 if the nail is very damaged), massage Huile Verte daily on nails and cuticles. Every two days, apply the hardening treatment Kératine Booster on bare nails, letting it dry until fully absorbed. Finally, 3 nights a week, apply the Masque S.O.S. in a thick layer and peel it off the next morning.

Soft Nails Routine

Excess moisture, too frequent applications of semi-permanent polish, pollution, or nutritional deficiencies—the causes of soft nails are varied but it’s not a fatality.

👉Our nail layering for soft nails: during the first week of care, apply the hardening treatment Kératine Booster on bare nails every 3 days, letting it dry until fully absorbed. Massage nails and cuticles twice a day with a drop of Huile Verte. In the 2nd week, apply the Strengthening base every 2 days in layering, without removing previous layers. Continue daily application of Huile Verte.

Active™ Layering

Always at the forefront of innovation in nail care, Manucurist has developed the Active™ range, unique formulas, hybrids between care and make up, that deeply treat natural nails while offering a beautifying effect.

Manucurist Active™ care polishes

Each Active™ polish applies very easily, without base or top coat, dries quickly, and targets a specific action:

  • Active Glow™ is a transparent care polish, rich in AHAs and sweet almond oil, that nourishes nails and gives them a pinkish shine more or less intense depending on the chosen fruit extract (Raspberry, blueberry, grape, cranberry...). Ideal to maintain healthy nails and regenerate them between polish applications.
  • Active™ Smooth is a CC Polish that smooths and evens nails, an all-in-one perfecter that erases imperfections thanks to its castor fiber-enriched formula. The BFF of ridged nails! Available in 4 shades, it suits all skin tones.
  • Active™ Bright is a brightening care polish that strengthens and revives the natural whiteness of nails thanks to its lemon extracts. Recommended to treat dull nails and strengthen soft and fragile nails.
  • Active™ Shine, rich in beetroot extract with moisturizing and antioxidant properties, is a highlighter that brightens and repairs. Perfect to instantly boost the shine of damaged nails.
  • Active™ Plump is a care polish enriched with plant collagen and peach extracts that intensely hydrates and creates a plumping visual effect, with a pearly baby rose finish.
  • Active™ Blur acts like a perfecting filter that smooths out irregularities and offers a soft pink blurring effect.

The Active™ range, all-in-one care polishes to enhance nails in one step.

How to combine polish layers?

With the Active™, nail layering opens up new possibilities. By playing with the number of layers of the same Active™ or by combining 2 different Active™, you can adjust the makeup effect and adapt it to your desires while benefiting from the advantages of each formula. Smooth & Glow, Shine & Bright, Plump & Blur... find your favorite mix & match.

⚠️Make sure to let each polish layer dry well and avoid applying more than 3 layers. The more layers you add, the longer the polish takes to dry and the more likely it is to wrinkle or chip quickly.

Layering & nail art: the art of playing with effects and colors

Bicolor layering

By layering two coats of different colored polish, you can create unique and super trendy shades. However, you need to find the right mix because not all polish colors necessarily go well together. We recommend pairing a first coat of intense and pigmented color with a second coat of translucent polish, with glitter or pearly effect to add depth and shine. We love the combinations Midnight x Mermaid, Hortencia x Mermaid, or Hollyhock x Moon, for example.

👉 You can create these two-tone layerings either with natural Green™ nail polishes or with Green Flash™ semi-permanents, but be careful to not mix two polishes from different ranges.

Glazed, Mirror, or Glitter layering

Applied over a Green™ or Green Flash™ base color layer, effect powders allow you to create a trendy manicure so easy. For perfectly icy Glazed nails like Hailey Bieber’s, the White Glazed and Pink Glazed powders are absolutely fabulous. And to illuminate your nails like never before, the Mirror Effect powder produces a beautiful chrome mirror effect. On Red Velvet red polish, Milky White white polish, or Hortencia pink polish, magnetic effect guaranteed!

And to shine to the tips of your nails and through the night, give in to the temptation of a glitter layering thanks to Manucurist’s biodegradable glitters. On a pigmented base color or a still-wet neutral color, sprinkle the glitters in an even layer or a subtle gradient according to your wishes. With more than a dozen glitter colors, you have plenty to express your creativity. We never get tired of it!

👉 Our tip for a flawless manicure: remove powder or glitter residues using a dusting brush before applying a layer of top coat that will set your nail art.

For manicure enthusiasts, layering is a natural reflex both for nail care and for beautifying them. Now, this technique holds no secrets for you. All that's left is to adopt the nail layering that matches your nail type and your nail art desires.
