Does gel polish damage nails? Effects and solutions

7 min to read

For about fifteen years, semi-permanent polish has become very popular. Its long tenue, flawless finish, and mirror shine quickly won over fans of the perfect manicure who want a pro-like result, even at home. But one question often comes up: what are the side effects of semi-permanent polish on our nails? Let's take stock to better understand what can weaken nails and how to protect them.

To remember:

  • Semi-permanent offers mirror shine and long tenue (2 to 3 weeks).
  • The risks mainly come from aggressive removal or too frequent applications.
  • A nail-friendly manicure involves preparation, moisturizing care, and gentle removal.
  • Check the composition: favor bio-sourced and vegan polishes, HEMA-free, TPO-free, and free of controversial substances.

What is semi-permanent polish?

A nail polish that seems to have everything to please

At first glance, semi-permanent polish is the ideal nail polish that has only advantages:

  • It is as easy to apply as a classic polish, ideal for a DIY manicure at home.
  • It dries in a few minutes under UV or LED lamp.
  • It is ultra resistant and can last without chipping for two to three weeks.
  • It offers a gel effect and Extreme shine that we love.

So far, semi-permanent polish has everything going for it, but when you look at its composition, doubts arise.

Is semi-permanent polish the ideal solution for a perfect manicure at home?

Controversial ingredients

In Europe, cosmetic products are subject to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. This regulation prohibits or restricts the use of many substances considered risky in cosmetics sold in the EU (notably substances classified as CMR — carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction). By purchasing polishes made in Europe, you are therefore guaranteed to benefit from products free of problematic ingredients.

And if you get a semi-permanent application at a beauty salon or buy gel or semi-permanent polishes online made outside the EU, do not hesitate to check the composition of these products. Make sure they are HEMA-free (without methacrylate monomers), TPO-free, and that they do not contain other banned substances such as DBP, toluene, formaldehyde, xylene, camphor, etc.

A removal that presents risks

The removal is probably the most delicate step of the manicure, the one that puts your nails to the test. In salons or at home, it is common to remove semi-permanent polish using a nail drill, nail file, or acetone remover. All these techniques, if poorly controlled, can permanently damage the nail plate and dry out the cuticles.

A poorly controlled nail drill, lasting damage to the nail plate.

The effects of semi-permanent polish on nail health

Not all nails react the same way to semi-permanent polish applications. It depends on their nature, the frequency of applications, and the techniques used. The most common effects are as follows:

Risks related to the use of UV lamps

UV or LED lamps are essential to catalyze the semi-permanent polish and harden it. Their ultraviolet rays are different from the UV rays emitted by the sun. Used reasonably (not too often, with a power below 48W, and respecting the indicated drying time), these UV/LED lamps do not present any particular danger (you are not at risk of skin cancer!).

With a longer curing time than LED lamps, UV lamps can cause a warming sensation, especially on sensitive nails. It is therefore recommended to prefer LED lamps, which are more efficient and less energy-consuming, and to apply sunscreen before the manicure, particularly for sensitive skin or in case of photosensitizing medical treatment.

Apply sunscreen on sensitive skin before the manicure to avoid any reaction to the UV lamps used for drying.

Alteration of keratin layers

The nail is made up of 90% keratin, a fibrous protein that accumulates and hardens by forming overlapping layers. Removing semi-permanent polish by sanding or filing can end up damaging this structure, especially if the technique is not perfectly mastered. Result: the plate is thinned and the nail becomes soft, dull, split, or brittle. In the longer term, nail growth can be disrupted and ridges may appear on the surface. For manicures, polish has an increasingly hard time holding.

Dehydration of the nail contour

Another method of semi-permanent removal: using a acetone-based remover. The problem is that acetone is a harsh solvent that dissolves the nail’s natural oils. The cuticles dry out and the nail loses its natural shield against external aggressions, leading to increased risk of infection.

Risks of nail sensitization

Redness, inflammation, or even allergic reactions are warning signs your nails send when they are weakened or in contact with an allergenic product. This happens when you chain semi-permanent manicures without rest or nail care between applications. Although it’s tempting to change polish color according to your mood (we understand!), we recommend waiting one to two weeks between each semi-permanent manicure. Use this time to adopt a new routine that allows you to combine semi-permanent polish and healthy nails.

Instead of chaining semi-permanent polish applications, take a break and pamper your nails.

How to combine semi-permanent polish and healthy nails?

Avoiding damaged nails from semi-permanent polish application is possible and not difficult! We guide you step by step for a manicure that respects the health of your nails.

Take care of your nails before, during, and after the semi-permanent application

A perfect and safe manicure starts well before the color and depends on several essential steps:

  • Nourished and hydrated nails daily with a nourishing oil for nails and cuticles such as Huile Verte, a complex of 6 vegetable oils (sweet almond, walnut, coconut, passion fruit, baobab, and bancoulier oils) that regenerates the nail and its surrounding area and promotes healthy growth.
  • Well-prepared nails: in other words, filed nails to give them a harmonious shape, pushed-back cuticles to clear the plate, a buffed surface (to open the keratin scales) and degreased.
  • A application protocol followed: by respecting the 4-layer rule (1 layer of base coat, 2 layers of color, 1 layer of top coat) applied in thin layers, without overlapping the cuticles, and cured under a UV/LED lamp for the indicated time.
  • Right after application and until the removal of the polish, continue to hydrate with a specific oil for nails and cuticles.

A successful and risk-free manicure requires the right steps.

To summarize:

  • Prepare your nails: file, push back cuticles, buff and degrease the nail plate.
  • Hydrate daily with Huile Verte (6 vegetable oils) or a suitable serum.
  • Follow the 4-layer rule: 1 base coat, 2 layers of color, 1 top coat, curing under a UV/LED lamp.
  • Respect breaks of 1 to 2 weeks between each application to allow your nails to regenerate.

Frequently asked questions

How to remove semi-permanent polish without damaging the nail?

We strongly advise against removing your semi-permanent polish with a nail drill or acetone remover. Prefer semi-permanent polish formulas that remove gently, without acetone or scraping, preserving the nail plate.

What are the side effects of semi-permanent polish?

The side effects of semi-permanent polish are generally linked to inappropriate manicure practices: too frequent applications and/or aggressive removal methods. The most common warning signs are: dehydration of the cuticles, soft or brittle nails, disturbed growth, more sensitive nails, or even allergic reactions.

Is semi-permanent polish dangerous for nails?

Semi-permanent polish is not dangerous in itself, but its intensive or poorly managed use can explain why semi-permanent polish damages nails. By respecting rest periods, gentle removal, and an appropriate care routine, it is possible to combine long tenue manicure and healthy nails.
